With the New York Mets signing Dellin Betances, here is the team's projected pitching rotation for the 2020 season:
Starters:
1. Jacob deGrom
2. Noah Syndergaard
3. Marcus Stroman
4. Michael Wacha
5. Rick Porcello
6. Steven Matz
Relievers:
1. Edwin Diaz
2. Jeurys Familia
3. Dellin Betances
4. Robert Gsellman
5. Justin Wilson
6. Brad Brach
On paper, this arguably is one of the deepest and talented pitching staffs in Major League Baseball. With the Betances addition, the franchise rose from playoff contenders to projected N.L. East champions and the National League representative in the 2020 World Series, according to The Launch Angle.
Before the signing, the Mets rotation was already highly talented. What was the Achilles Heel of the team last year was the lack of production from the bullpen. Assuming the Diaz and Familia return to their All-Star forms from two seasons ago, Dellin Betances will only supplement that production.
Although he only pitched 0.2 innings in 2019, Betances was one of the best relievers in the 2018 season. Amongst relievers that pitched at least 60 innings, he ranked 2nd in SO/9 (15.53), tied for 10th in FIP (2.47), ranked 3rd in SO% (42.3%), and ranked 3rd in Skilled Independent ERA, or SIERA (2.03). Aside from his individual advanced sabermetric measures in 2018, Betances also averaged 97.8 mph on his fastball and 84.2 mph on his slider as well in 2018.
If he can achieve numbers similar to the ones above from 2018, Betances will be highly productive for the Mets in 2020, and will supplement an already stellar bullpen and help the team win their division, and maybe a World Series.
