The New York Mets are currently 61-56 and 3rd Place in the N.L. East. Since the All-Star Break, the team is 21-6 and is currently 0.5 games behind of the second Wild Card spot in the National League. There are several reasons as to why the Mets are in a playoff push. It can be attributed to the offensive contributions of exciting young players, in Pete Alonso, Jeff McNeil, and Michael Conforto, but it could also be attributed behind the hard throwing duo of Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard.
As it pertains to deGrom, who is coming off a Cy Young season, he ranks high in pitch velocity amongst his contemporaries. Amongst pitchers that have thrown at least 2,000 pitches, deGrom ranks fourth in pitch velocity on his four-seamer (96.8 mph), sixth in sinker velocity (96.3 mph), first in slider velocity (92.5 mph), third in changeup velocity (90.1 mph), and second in curveball velocity (84.3 mph). Based on his statistics, deGrom continues to be highly productive, but what is most impressive is that his pitch arsenal generates significant levels of velocity, which is something that cannot be ignored.
deGrom's fellow right-handed counterpart and teammate, Noah Syndergaard, has also been consistent in the velocity of his pitch arsenal. Amongst pitchers that have thrown at least 2,000 pitches, Syndergaard ranks first in four-seam velocity (97.8 mph), first in sinker velocity (97.6 mph), fifth in slider velocity (88.9 mph), and second in changeup velocity (91.1 mph).
The velocities of the pitch arsenals of both deGrom and Syndergaard are consistent and is attributable to their high levels of production. As the Mets have seen an increase in offensive production, the duo of Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard have contributed greatly to a potential playoff appearance in 2019.
